Mary Anne’s Journey

in her own words: a “Keeping it real” timeline

Q&A with Mary Anne

What did you change?

I completely changed the way I eat. At first it felt like a punishment. It was hard! I used to eat emotionally. I no longer do that. I no longer turn to ice cream to feel better. I no longer drink a lot. I made a commitment to myself to take better care of myself. Too often, we moms put ourselves last. I put myself last for 28 years. Now, I am focusing on myself and my health.

How did you stay consistent?

I find the fewer choices I have, the better. I understand how to make better choices, which is key. I have more energy and I know how I feel when I workout. Conversely, I know how I feel when I DON’T workout. Or eat something I shouldn’t. That helps keep me on track.

What helped you personally?

Meeting with Sandy on a regular basis! Having Brittany as a great trainer, and having funny people to workout with. That’s key. For years, I belonged to Boost Fitness across the street. But it never clicked for me (even working with personal trainers). And I never went. Now? I consistently workout, I try to make good food choices, and I use my treadmill at home (because I find it helps with my anxiety). I still need to do a better job with my water, though.

Was there a turning point?

I think that point came when I hit the 40-pound mark. Even though I knew I wouldn’t make my 60-pound goal, it became apparent that I had lost a lot of weight and that maybe I didn’t NEED to lose 60 pounds.

How do you keep your head in the game to keep weight off?

I hit a wall around December of last year. I wanted to give up. I was in a bad place. Now, finally, I realize that even if I indulge a little bit, I’ll be OK. I know how to get back on track fairly quickly. I won’t completely revert back to my bad habits if I have a glass of wine or some regular peanut butter. And I bought myself a lot of nice new clothes and I want those to continue to fit!
