Blueberries & your memory
Blueberries are filled with antioxidants.
Of course, we have all heard this word - but what does it
really mean in terms of our health?
Antioxidants are basically superhero elements that help our bodies fight the onslaught of free radicals. By giving our body less of what may hurt us - and more of what may help, we are making strides in supporting optimum health.
The by-products of living in our world as well as our own metabolism produce unstable molecules known as free radicals. When our systems are out of balance, research has shown that free radicals contribute to poor health outcomes. By feeding our bodies well with nutrient rich foods, like delicious blueberries - we are arming our own immune systems with powerful tools to keep things in balance.
Our brains are the hard drive in which we record all of the data of our lives. Think of your memories as your data! By providing our “hard drive” the tools it needs to remain at its highest working capacity, our data is secure. Science is carefully examining the effects that antioxidants have in slowing or even reversing some of the symptoms of aging (such as memory loss). “The brain uses an abundance of oxygen due to its high metabolic activity. This makes the brain more susceptible to free radical attack than just about any other area of the body.” https://www.alzheimers.net/antioxidants-lend-themselves-to-brain-health
Protect your brain - as well as all of your other systems by eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Brightly colored produce tends to have the highest level of antioxidants, and can help arm you against the damages our body takes just living our best lives. For more information, there are several resources listed below.
Here is a tip to add more produce in your diet:
Roast a tray of mixed veggies on Sunday night to snack on or to take for lunches on the top of a salad all week long. Some great veggies to roast are all colors of peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, red onion, and mushrooms. The secret weapons in roasted veggies are adding a tiny bit of olive oil and lemon zest. Simply wash and cut the veggies and pop them in a baggie with a tiny bit of olive oil and the zest. Give the bag a little shake and put them on a foil lined cookie sheet. Roast them at 450 degrees ‘til they smell done and you have a whole week of yumminess with almost no clean up!
